Seyfert galaxy: Named after
astronomer Carl Seyfert who
discovered them in the early 1940s,
the nuclei of these galaxies show the
spectral features characteristic of very
hot gas localized in a small region,
conditions that suggest violent
activity in the galaxies’ centers.
Seyfert galaxies are one type of galaxy
with active galactic nuclei (AGN).
